Mens Captain's Report
The RVCP 10k was the last round of 12 for this seasons
HRRL. Although many of our regular men's runners were missing we still
put 3 good teams out and our A and B team were again very competitive.
The course is a 3 lap affair with one small hill per lap.
The efforts of all our men and particularly Howard and Mich who
completed all 12 races have enabled us to finish runners up in both the
A and B league improving on last year and closing the gap with the
dominant Winchester teams.
I would like to thank everyone that supported our teams with their
participation in the races and ask that we make a further push towards
the top spot next year. If our best teams turn up at each event we are
very hard to beat, so can I ask that anyone currently doing a couple of
races try to do a few more and the regular runners if we can all do at
least 8 out of the 12 races we can move on again. Great season well done
Portsmouth Joggers Men's teams see you at the first race next season
which is likely to be Overton in September.
Fixture list to follow in the summer stick the dates in your diary. Get
your forms in early no more looking for late entries or swops, make an
early commitment for each of the races you can do. Thanks for all your
efforts this year.

The penultimate round of the HRRL season took place at
Alton over an undulating course on country lanes. The weather was again
warm for this fixture but much cooler than the previous year.
Our men put up arguably their best performance of the year with the A,B
and C team's all very strong, proving when we have our best teams out we
can be a match for any team.
Thank you to Bob Pentland for a rare appearance in the HRRL and hope to
see you again next year, Bob at 55 completed the course in 66.00 mins
which is amazing.
We are still in the hunt for second place for both the A and B leagues
and although the last race At Southampton over 10k will not help our
chances of securing those positions it has been an excellent season,
well done to everyone that supported the Club with a few of our runners
completing the vast majority of the events.
The Performance award however goes to Ronnie Adams who clocked 57.00 and
was top vet 40 finishing 3rd overall beating our own Rob Ward who also
ran another good race in 6th.
The Random award goes to Marcos Morley a new name to me so well done for
your 1.17.04.
The two prize winners will receive a voucher from the club

The 9th Road Race League event was staged at Salisbury and was over 10 undulating miles. Portsmouth joggers managed to field full teams so well done for everyone that turned up to enable us to do that.
Rob Ward led us home with another good time 56.30 and 6th place overall the A team was then made up of Myself, Tony Conway and Ben Stait. The B team was headed up by Chris Jenkins followed by Howard Clark, Tony Hewett and Mich Hardie. The C team was led by Russ Bestley, Mike Taylor, Kevan Marris and Aiden Maxwell.
Lots of good times on a blustery day but the Performance award goes to Ben Stait for another good run and a time of 64.44. The Random award goes to Kevan Marris. Well done to the Ladies with an impressive team performance and strong A team 4th overall.
Please if you havent allready applied for the next event at Eastleigh get them in, just a flat 10k but we need a few more faces.

Ladies Captain's Report
No-one had run this course before and what were we doing , a 10 mile
run in Salisbury in the Hampshire road race league? Just as well our
geography was not so good!
The ladies fielded 3 full teams which was very encouraging in view of
the marathon training which many of the regular HRRL runners are now
well into. In fact several had run 16 to 19 miles for marathon training
the day before but had still turned out to support the Joggers in the
league - a very big thank you to those runners. For the rest of us the
course was very scenic, pretty little villages and houses , snowdrops
along the road but there were a few tough steep inclines and the wind
was pretty tough! The weather changed from bright sunshine on arrival to
threatening dark clouds and some of our runners did unfortunately end up
running in the rain.
Thanks to the Pompey men for supporting the ladies as they came round
the last bend to face a run round the running track to actually get to
the finish! I know it was hard for most of us lady runners so well done
to all!!
Our A team stands as 6th at present and can I ask as many ladies as
possible to enter for the next league race the Eastleigh 10K on sunday
29th March( closing date wed 18th march or when race limit reached) .
It's near to home, it's flat and its only 10K!! it would be great to get
as many ladies there as possilble to get a good result and raise our
league position. ( the men are beating the ladies team at the moment so
we need all the help we can get!!)

Mens Captain's Report
The 8th round of the HRRL season was the only 20 miler in the race
calendar and although we sent a strong squad up there we were one short
of a full team with 11 in total. The ladies I believe had 7 so a couple
short as well.
Rob Ward again lead us home with an impressive position and time, with
good grouping for the remainder of the 7 positions to fill the A and B
team. 2.15 to 2.22 covered these positions and was good team running
with Tony Conway coming out on top with a return to top form.
The Ladies were led home by Sandra Hopkins in a big PB of 2.35.37.
Naouele and Catherine made up the A team in good times. Carole, Michelle
and Tracy made up the B team with Carmen recording a good time for her
first 20 miler.
Next event is at Salisbury a 10 mile undulating race anyone who hasn’t
entered please come along so we can finish the season with 4 good
results, the other races are Eastleigh, Alton, and Netley.

Ladies Captain's Report
Thanks to all who ran yesterday. After the extreme weather conditions we
have experienced recently it turned out to be a perfect day for racing.
The race is very popular as a test of marathon training and the start
did become very tense as many were still waiting patiently in the queues
for the loos as the starter was asking runners to make their way to the
start line!! I think everyone got to the line on time!
The route is scenic winding through small back roads and the slight
undulations are not as noticeable on the first lap but do become very
obvious second time round!
Seven ladies braved the 20 mile race and proved their marathon training
is going very well as they all finished strongly. Congratulations to
Naouele on achieving an excellent time of 2 hours 51.59 in her first
race over this distance but all of the times achieved were a credit to
our club!
Thanks again for your strong support and lets aim go get a good group
running in the next league race which is the Salisbury 10 miles - a snip
after 20 miles!

Mens Captain's Report
The Ryde 10 was the 7th event this year in the HRRL.
It was a bitter day with a strong wind blowing from the North East
causing sand and grit to blowover the course in the final half mile. 33
joggers braved the elements with I believe 22 men and 11 women a great
effort with the club again picking up the tab for the race. Pb's were
hard to come by although the wind did help in the last few miles. Saying
that everbody that went over deserves a medal for braving the elements
and there were some good performances. The finish was moved due to a
unofficial course change with most people not realising they had
finished as the normal finish was moved forward down the course by a 100
metres or so and runners had to be stopped.
The next event is at Bramley near Reading and is over 20 miles which is
ideal for Marathon training. The course is largely flat and has only one
small climb on each lap of a two lap course.
The Performance Award goes to Rob Ward for his 57.10 a great time on the
day and 5th place overall.
The Random Award goes to Colin Chambers.

Mens Captain's Report
The 6 th round of the Hrrl season was held at Stubbington over a new 10k
course. The conditions were good and the course well received.
Our mens team continued to field strong teams with 35 turning up to wear the vest. The leagues will be available on the HRRL web (see link above). Individuals in the A B and C team all put in good performances with more Pb's evident.
The strength in depth in the rest of our team also helped our cause.
Tough events at Ryde and Bramley next over a hilly 10 and a fair 20
miler hope as many as possible can make these two races.
In the last 3 events we have fielded approximately 100 runners and this
has contributed on us closing the gap on the leaders in the leagues.
The Performance Award goes to Howard Clark who put in a very solid run
after running 16 miles on the Saturday Marathon training.
The Random Award goes to Jen Bryant.

Mens Captain's Report
The 5th round of the HRRL season was the local 5 miler at the MBC hosted
by PAC. The Victory is a flat 5 and PB's are very much a possibility.
The day was perfect with very little wind, sunshine and a good
temperature for road running.
The stats are as follows. We had 32 Men and 13 women, With the men
winning both the A league and the B league with our C team finishing 3rd
in the B league our overall positions after round 5 are on the HRRL web
site. This is the best result we have achieved in many years, maybe
decades, so a big well done to all that took part and everyone that
helped put the teams together. The top teams appeared to have sent
weakened sides but it is still a significant achievement.
It will not be so easy at Stubbington but hopefully we have a strong
team for that race and anyone that missed the close should keep a look
out for spare numbers for injuries etc.
There were plenty of PB's again and with our A team all home by 29.12
mins and our B team all home by 30.35 this is great strength in depth
and always should be our trump card considering we have by far the
biggest membership. The C team were complete by 31.48 which is also
great running. Well done for the PB's and for all the runners especially
the ones coming back from injuries and lay offs great to have you back
and hope you can run regularly for the club in the future.
This result has been over 3 years in the making lets keep it up and
carry on improving individually and as a team.

The 4th round of the HRRL took place at Gosport on a new course over
the half marathon distance. The conditions were ideal with not too much
wind and mild temperatures. This event is usually well supported by the
Joggers but on this occasion over 40 turned up which was great to see.
There were so many good performances from both male and female runners
that it is hard to pick out individuals but for everyone who ran well
and or achieved a pb well done and even if you didn’t have your best day
keep coming back and run better next time. Lets see if we can keep the
momentum going with another good quality turn out out for the local
Victory 5 starting from the MBC on December 7th, we have no excuses for
not turning out on mass for that one.
I do have to pick out one performance from our new young star Christina
Spiers after only a handfull of races and in a year where she has
recently achieved a debut Marathon time of 3.13, she was setting new
boundaries again in the half and with a time of 1.24.54 this is
outstanding and I believe she was the 5th lady home. Well done Christina
and keep turning out for your club both on the Road and Off Road your
help at the top end of our Women's team is very much needed.
Thank you to all the people that care about the competitive side of our
running club and have helped us put such a strong squad together for
Gosport, well done you know who you are.

Ladies Captain's Report
Well done to all the ladies who ran so brilliantly at the Gosport Half
Marathon. Weather was perfect and course was flat if not perfect!
Everyone finished strongly having run a good race and most achieving a
PB!
A special mention must go to Christina Spiers for achieving such a
brilliant result - a forecast of many excellent times to come I imagine.
Having run 3 races we were in 5th position in the league and after the
Gosport we had moved up to 3rd position - a great achievement!
It cannot be expected that everyone should turn out for every race but
it would be great if we could depend on having a strong turn out at the
remaining races in the HRRL to ensure we maintain or even better improve
on our position. We need all runners and if you enjoy putting your
training to the test why not run in a league race. If we could each
commit to just a couple or 3 of the races we could field a winning team
each time!! So ladies can you sign up for a couple of the followiing
races and help your club to success!
If you let me know which races you can do I can help organise / share
transport and co-ordinate numbers. Running is great and running to help
your club is even better!

The 3rd round of the HRRL season took place over a 10 mile course at
Lordshill nr Southampton. The course was fair and fairly flat with an
interesting couple of sections that were off road including a wet grassy
finish.
The men were well represented with 14 runners and with lots of pb's and
strong performances from a mainly regular group of runners. All of our
men's teams performed well moving us back up the leagues after a
disappointing previous fixture.
The next round is at Gosport so please turn out in force for that one on
a new course. The next round after that is the Victory 5 at the MBC so
please turn out for this local event and get a new 5 mile pb.
Well done to Russ Bestley who continued his excellent rehabilitation
with a very impressive 72 minutes well ahead of his predicted schedule.
The performance award goes to Mich Hardie for a excellent effort well
under 70 minutes.
The Random award goes to Ali Bone.

The second round of the HRRL season was the Solent Half Marathon. With only 5 women and 10 men we fielded incomplete teams with The Chichester 10k taking some of our better Male runners. It started misty but ended up quite warm on this undulating but fair course, there are some long stretches but it is also quite scenic on mostly country lanes.
The mens A team were 8th and dropped to 6th in the league, The B team were 5th and are 5th place. The C team was incomplete and is 11th.
All our runners performed well and everyone encouraged and supported each other to our last team member came home with another PB, for that reason Carmen Scales wins her 2nd performance award and it was refreshing that after her good run she supported all the other runners finishing behind her regardless of what team they came from. The random Award goes to Mike Taylor well done Mike they both get a refund for the event.
The next event is at Lordshill please get your forms in now do not miss the closing date like some did for The Solent there are no excuses its 10 miles and the forms are on our web site. Hopefully fielding incomplete teams will be a thing of the past this season. 2 weeks after Lordshill is the Gosport Half so put your forms in for that as well.

Overton was the first race in the new Road race league. This 5 miler has kicked the season off for a number of years.
Both men and women managed to field full teams and the results were
as follows:
Mens : A were 3rd with B and C 4th and 10th in the B league
Ladies: A were 4th with B and C 2nd and 6th in the B league
these results were very good but still very few new faces.
Well done to Malcolm Beckett on his league debut running 31.29, he was awarded the performance of the day and will receive his entry fee back from the club and Eileen Hegarty won the Random award and will get the same.
We need new runners who can run consistently in the league for the club or if you cant do all the distances or all the events just do a few.
The next event, on October 12th, is the Solent Half Marathon and is near Hardley/ Southampton forms on the Web.
It is a flat/undulating half with good scenery and one or two hills. Hope to see a good turn out and for all The Abingdon Marathon boys I will be running this as my last warm up run for that event so no excuses, run it as if it was the first half of the Marathon the following week perfect last week training.
