Men’s Race Report
The final event of the 2009/2010 Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL) took
place in the idyllic surroundings of the Royal Victoria Country Park in
Netley. A fairly fast 10km route within the park it was very pleasing to
see yet another good turnout from the club (16 men) across the entire
spectrum of ability.
Rob Ward led the Joggers home in 5th place securing his position at the
top of the Men’s Individual Championship – fantastic result and a great
way to round off a successful season. Second man home was Martin
Williams with another impressive time and finished 3rd in the V50 age
category. The A team was then completed by Mark Campion and Eric Parker.
Phil Guest (37:10), narrowly pipped by Eric, headed the B team (complete
in under 39 mins) closely followed by myself and rounded off with fine
performances from Reg Ball and Tony Conway.
The C-team consisted of Tony Hewitt, Mich Hardie, Melvyn ‘Dickie’ Bird
and Chris Jenkins and as ever we were all ably supported by the runners
who on this occasion were Tony Saunders, Janos Pula, Paul Channing and
Ted McEvoy.
The men’s performance award for this event goes to Rob Ward in
recognition of another great run and for becoming the Hampshire Road
Race League Men’s Individual Champion.
Well that’s it for another season and on behalf of Martin Bacon and
myself, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who
have supported us in our role as HRRL Male team Captain, donning the PJC
colours and representing us at one or more of the events. In all, 71 men
have started and more importantly finished an HRRL event. The success of
this club would not be realised without the support, commitment and
dedication of our club members and I sincerely hope that this is
continued, if not bettered, next year. If you haven’t taken part in one
of these events why not give it a go – in the end it’s the taking part
that counts.
So until the start of the next season at the Overton 5 mile event (4th
Sep 10) have a well deserved break, keep up the training and I hope to
see you on the start line ready to take on our personal goals and team
challenges which will include the inauguration of the PJC Men’s D Team!

Ladies Race Report
It was really great to see a mixture of new faces with the familiar
old last Sunday for the last of this year’s league race. There was great
enthusiasm from all, only slightly dampened by the light drizzle.
The course is very straightforward: 3 laps around the park with the last
lap turning off to finish on the other side of the field. Sandie please
note for next year!!
The team were lead home by an excellent first run in a Portsmouth
Joggers vest for Debbie Hall in a time of 41.46, second home Rachel Clay
42.26 in her first race of the season for us and third in the A team was
Carly Kirk in 44.13. The A team result moved us up the table into 4th
place. The b team were Sandie Howard 45.04, Ros Marsh 45.36 and Eileen
Hegarty 51.40 (I did have a very sore foot!). and this result maintained
their 4th position overall I was very happy to see we also had a full C
team made up of Laura Clark 53.35, Carmen Scales 58.20 and Denise Wight
in a time of 1.03.56. maintaining 12th position in B division 11 ( c
team).
Thank you to all who turned out to run for PJC. It was a great to end
the season on a high to hear our A team declaring we are going to win
next season! So watch out Winchester PJ ladies are back!! Our success
again depended on having a full complement of 3 teams of ladies running;
it really is not all about speed but taking part and enjoying being part
of a team. So thanks again and enjoy your running over the summer ready
for a fresh start to the season at the Overton 5.

Men’s race Report
Race ten of the HRRL was the Alton 10 mile race, renowned for being a
tough undulating course and this year it was the venue for the Hampshire
10 Mile Championships.
There was another good turn out for the men, with Joggers taking to the
start line and it was good to see some new faces (and some not so new)
toeing the line – great to see you out there representing the club.
The A team was led home by Mark Brier in a good time of 1:00:36 and
rounded off with Eric Parker (1:02:10), myself (1:03:41) and Mark
Ferguson (1:05:06).
Tony Hewett (1:06:06) headed the B team just holding off Tony Conway and
they were closely followed by Russ Bestley and Chris Jenkins (1:07:58).
The C-team was over the line in under 74 mins and consisted of Mich
Hardie, Melvin ‘Dickie’ Bird, Tom Roberts and Pete ‘Bunny’ Warren.
Finally but just as importantly were the sterling efforts of Brian
‘Budgie’ Johnson, Andy Hall, Janos Pula who achieved very respectable
times (all well inside 80 mins) and helped to ensure that rival league
club runners were pushed down the results.
I have decided to award the men’s performance award for this race to
Pete ‘Bunny’ Warren in recognition for a good run (even though I have
heard from an inside source he was a bit disappointed with his time) and
to acknowledge him finishing up in the points for the C team for the
first time– well done Pete! Oh and by the way no excuses now for not
joining Russ Bestley’s group for training!
With the final league race to be held this coming Sunday (16th May),
10km at the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley, Portsmouth Joggers
are well placed to finish high in both leagues. Entries are being
accepted on the day so get on down there, pull on the club vest and have
a run to help us to secure our positions in the leagues and at the same
time have some fun.

Ladies’ Race Report.
Thank you to the 9 ladies who braved the cold for the Alton 10 on
Sunday. Last year it was so different, extremely hot and sunny but this
year I was not the only one to have brought out the thermals again. It
was very chilly but at least it stayed dry and for those of us slower
runners the sun did actually shine for about 10 minutes. The course was
slightly different this year- the finish was changed and we had to run
back up the hill past the old finish and then turn into the college but
it is a very pleasant, rural, undulating course. The course was very
well marshalled, three water stations and with very little traffic it
made for a very comfortable run. All nine ladies who ran have helped us
on the league tables! So to those who say it is only for the young, fit
and fast – no way, we all count towards the total score! Catherine
Durkin was the first lady home followed by Katie Carew-Robinson and
Claire Hall., the next 3 runners made up the B team = Eileen Hegarty,
Laura Clark and Hanah Quade and the C team were Charlotte Rolfe, Denise
Wight and Julie Biles. The ladies’ performance award goes to Denise
Wight who lives in Salisbury but still turns out to run for the joggers
when she can, well done!
Hope you managed to get your entry in for Netley! See you there for the
last race of the season.

The latest round of the HRRL season was held at Eastleigh over a fast
10k course. We had 17 men taking part with again some more pb's.
Rob Ward got under the 33 minute barrier in 32.55 to lead the team home
well backed up by Martin Williams in 35.13 a superb time for an over 50
and then Eric Parker 36.29 and Phil Guest in 36.47.
The B team was Howard Clark, Mark Grandy, Mich Hardy and Martin Bacon.
The C team was Melvin Bird, Russ Bestley, Reg Ball and Adam Clarke. We
were well supported outside the teams by Tony Saunders, Tom Roberts,
Dave Williams, Bill Scales and Michael Standon.
Going into the last two races we are well positioned in the leagues to
finish high up with all our teams in both the A league and B league.

Men's Team Report
The latest round of the HRRL season was held In Salisbury last Sunday 7th March. The course is fast but has a few undulations and on the day the conditions were coldish but favourable.
The A team was again led home by Rob Ward in 54.24 but well backed up by Howard Clark and Eric Parker who ran great times both achieving new PB's and Tony Hewett completed the team also with a new PB. The B team's first 3 Home Derek, Mitch and Mark also managed decent PB's to continue recent good form, I completed that team. The C team was Russ Bestley, Tony Conway, Melvyn Bird and Patrick Harfield.
We had 17 men so well done to all who ran well outside the teams.
Thanks to all that stayed behind to cheer the rest of the team home. The flags and the team spirit was great lets keep it up. I don’t think we could of done any better in the leagues as the competition is very strong and all teams held their own. Check the HRRL for current team and individual positions with 3 races to go.
Please get in Alton and Netley to finish the season on a high with still league positons to play for. Eastleigh is next but is closed now.
For a very large Pb and to get down to 72.58 the Performance award goes to Del Roberts.

Ladies Team Report
Again the weather proved very favourable and was dry, bright and
quite warm when running. The course is very pleasant, running on country
roads with very pretty English countryside views of snow drops etc.
Again it was very encouraging to see so many ladies ready to turn up and
race for the Joggers and we had runners in total.
Yes the competition at the top of the league tables is very stiff but we
are showing great promise this year as a number of ladies are running
for the first time in the league and are having a very positive effect
on our results.
Our first lady in was Carly Kirk 1.12.12in only her third race and
having knocked several minutes off her time in the Ryde 10 mile, second
in the A team was Ros Marsh in a time of 1.12.45 and third was Victoria
Glassett 1.14.33
The B team were Eileen Hegarty, Sharon Bryan and Maggie Marsh.
Well done to all who ran but the performance award has been awarded to
Sharon Bryan for achieving a PB over this distance, well done to her.
Another performance award has to be given to our mens’ team who were so
supportive in their cheering on of the ladies as we ran down the lane
and then had to run around the track to finish on the other side, most
of us certainly found that last bit of energy to keep going but Carmen
really pulled out the stops and ran around the track in a style akin to
a 200 metre sprinter!!

Bramley 20 miler was the latest round of the HRRL season we managed to field 3 mens teams and two womens teams.
Good performances and PB's throughout the Men's A, B and C team. Thanks to Nic, Mac and Rob for giving us a solid C team. Well done to Iaan for a very well paced race and a fine time in the B team.
Our A team, Howard was first in with a big new PB
and also Mitch with another big PB. Russ
brought the A team home in 2.17.13 again very good running which was
good enough for 4th place in the A league. In the B league we were 2nd
and 5th.
There were a number of performances down the field that could of won the
award but 2.10.58 cant be ignored well done Howard.
For the Ladies well done to all and another good team performance and a
big congratulations to Carmen with another
much improved time on last years race. On this occasion the winner
stands out and goes to Katie for a massive pb down to 2.39.33 well done
keep up the good work.

As we were driving up to Bramley through a blizzard of snow I was a bit concerned about what weather conditions were going to be like! However, it cleared up and it almost stayed dry throughout the run. The course is a little bit undulating and the hills definitely seemed more challenging on the second lap but it was very well marshalled by friendly marshals and police officers. The roads were quiet country lanes through farming land (some interesting smells!) and while they were not closed to traffic there weren’t many cars about and most drivers were quite considerate of the runners (makes a change!).
Good performances by all and encouraging results

After the cancellation of the Stubbington 10k it was onto Ryde in the IOW for the 6th leg of the HRRL. We sent another strong squad with 18 men and a very healthy 16 women with the club again funding the entries.
On a perfect day for road running there were too many pb's and good performances to mention individually. It was a great team effort with our 12th man home in 74 mins. The Men's A team were brought home by Scott Elliot in an excellent 61.32 and the B team by Derek Powles in a big pb of 64.42. The C team by Mark Grandy in another pb of 66.52. The teams were 5th in an ultra competitive A league and the B and C team were 2nd and 3rd in the B league. Well done to our Ladies who put together their strongest team for years and got the results they deserved with many stand out performances.
Onwards to Bramley for the 20 miler Sunday hope to see some of you there.

this and future performance prizes. This goes to Scott Elliot one of our
youngest team members who set it up from the front and stayed on well

course. Well done Scott get under that hour mark before the end of the

We had a fantastic turn out of 15 ladies for the scenic Ryde 10. It was great to get to the Hard and see loads of Joggers descending on the Hard going in two by two to get their 2 for 1 offer on the ferry! It was a bit like a school outing: jokes and food being showered around. The weather was much kinder this year and it was actually quite a pleasant warm up walking from the terminal to the clubhouse ( unlike the sandstorm of last year!!) It stayed dry and bright throughout the race and the only problems were a few hairy roundabouts and some angry motorists but the marshalling was excellent on the whole course. We saw some brilliant runs on this pleasant but tough and hilly course particularly from Sandie Howard- 8th lady in and our first lady Jogger home in a personal best of 1.10.16 Completing our A team were Victoria Glassett and third home was Carly Kirk. This was only her second race and she finished with a great PB in a time of 1.13.14. We had a full B and C team and still had 6 more lady finishers!

Gosport Half Marathon was the 5th event in the HRRL season. We had
another strong and large team at Gosport with 30 men taking part.
Although everyone performed well with a few pb's scattered between us we
finished in 5th place in the A league because of the very strong teams
sent out by our nearest rivals who really do have strength in depth at
the top of these races. Just to name a few, well done to Bob and Reg who
are still well into our B team with solid times in the 1.25's and
considering they are both in the 55/59 category there experience is
great to have, to Derek and Howard who are still improving race on race
with further pb's and to Shimpei who ran with a lot of promise on his
debut for the team at 1.27.
We will have nearly 50 men in Stubbington but again will be up against
some crack teams so one or two more pb's will be needed so don’t go mad
over Christmas. See you at our pub to pub race a
7 miles'ish undulating
course, which is a great warm up race for Stubbington and
recommended.
Our B and C team were again very strong and finished right up in the B
league with our 12th man home in 1,28.03 for any who just missed out on
the C team we intend to have a D team next year just need a D team
captain ( Russ I think this job is being earmarked for you for next year
if you can improve a bit ).
Well done to all the team whatever time you ran was a great turn out,
can I make a request that everyone supports their slower team mates in
when you have finished your run, get some kit on and come back if the
weather is bad.
After all that there was I am told one stand out run and the performance
award goes to Neal Dobson who apparently smashed his pb and is down to
1.35.06 well done Neal hope to see you at all the races.

Ladies Team Report
Congratulations
to the ladies who ran in the Gosport Half Marathon last Sunday.
It was great to see 13 ladies wearing the Joggers vest and giving us our
A /B and C team results. Despite the earlier heavy rains conditions were
good, quite mild and not much wind. As a spectator there were only a few
drops of rain but out on the course there was one heavier rain shower.
Unfortunately the main problem was that one area of the course was water
logged and runners were advised to run through the water which turned
out to be icy cold ( and they had to do this twice!) . Most runners ran
( slightly) slower times and it
would seem that the shock of the cold water and
the time taken to recover
was most probably the factor which slowed everyone down.
Our first lady home for the A team was Christina
Spiers (taking a day off from football) followed by Victoria Glassett
and Sandra Hopkins.
The B team were Catherine Durkin, Naoele Chamcham and
Katie Carew-Robinson and the
C team were Fran Groves , Louise Cheeseman and Laura Clark.
And we still had Carmen Scales, Nadia Chambers, Julie
Biles and Debbie Pentland as back up!
This result leaves the ladies A team in fifth place
and the B team in 4 place. Everyone can now take a rest until the New
Year when the HRRL kicks off with the Stubbington 10K ( almost full)
followed by the Ryde 10 and then the Bramley 20 ( great for marathon
training!).Hope you have got these
dates in your diary
and have already sent off the forms and will be there to help the ladies
move up the results ladder!! Thanks once again to all ladies who have
turned out to support our club.

The Lordshill 10 was the 4th round of the HRRL season. In ridiculous weather conditions and a flooded course it was quite surprising that the race even started. We had 16 Men and 9 Women at a race that is historically not particularly well supported so that was a good turnout going into Events at Gosport and Stubbington where we are always strong.
In very tough conditions most of our runners performed very well with lots of good times considering the driving rain and deep flooded areas. Our men's team were strong again with Rob, Eric, Tony and Scott making up the A team, B team was Chris, Howard, Reg and Myself and the C team all in before 70 mins were Russ, Mich, Phil and Derek. Thanks for the good back up outside the top 12 from Neal Dobson, Paul Channing, Rick Stamp and Tom Roberts.
Vicky, Roz and Sandra made up our ladies A team, with the B team filled by Catherine, Noelle and Maria. Unfortunately our C team were incomplete because Michelle twisted her ankle in the flood water and had to pull out. Well done though to Ali and Carmen who brought in the team and with another pb for Carmen.
Apologies to Laura Clark who was our 7th Lady home at Lordshill and enabled The Ladies C team to be complete. Well done to Laura, we didn’t know you were there, say hello to one of us before or after the event so we can give you some support. Reg Ball and Sandra Hopkins were both 3rd in their age groups in the Hampshire Championships.
The Solent Half Marathon hosted the Hampshire Championships at Hardley, it was also the third round of the HRRL season. In perfect conditions PJC fielded 3 full teams.
All our runners performed well with several easing back due to Marathons next week. Special mention should go to Howard Clark, Mich Hardie and Derek Powles who all achieved impressive pb's. Any of these names and Reg Ball who was first in his age category could of won the Performance of the Day award but on this occasion the only winner can be Rob Ward who won the race and is now the Hampshire Champion over the half marathon distance. It may not of been a pb but it takes a lot of guts to win a race especially in the closing stages. Well done Rob everybody in the team are proud of you but don’t forget join us in as many events as you can because the standards this year are even higher and your results at the front of these races make all the difference to our A team.
Unfortunately we only had 2 Ladies and didn’t have a complete team let alone 3 teams which is a shame so come on Ladies have a go at Lordshill over 10 miles in a few weeks time. Lets keep getting our forms in early, I think we lost at least 7 potential runners at Solent because forms were in too late.

This race came round quickly after the previous 5 miler at Overton so provided a good chance of improvement and pbs on a flatter track. The only problem being the amount of local races on this weekend which is annoying.
The men fielded 20 runners and the ladies a disappointing 5 runners and therefore only one team.
Robin Ward led the team home in 26.56 and there were improved times from Overton from Martin Williams, Eric Parker, Howard Clark, Tony Hewett, Mark Ferguson, Martin Bacon, and Tom Roberts. There were also pb's within this list and also amongst our other runners. Welcome back to Reg Ball and Mark Campion we hope you both can do as many events as possible.
A special thanks to the runners that came down from our Stansted event in the morning and supported the team it was much appreciated and must have been a tough run after running off road earlier.
Another good result for our men's team with our C team being brought home by Derek Powles in a PB time of 32.12, which is significantly quicker than we achieved at Overton. Well done to everyone that ran and keep up the numbers in our next few events.
If you haven't already got in Solent (11/10) do so asap just in case the limit is reached and the same applies for Lordshill.

The Team results are very good, against strong opposition on a short course and sets us up for the season.
The next event is Victory on our home soil so get in that one and support the team.
The longer distance races start at Solent over a half marathon in October so lets get out for that one, last year we we sent a weakened team over a distance we are strong at so lets go there in force this time. If you have a Marathon coming up ease off you might still score for the teams.
