Training Groups
Entry Level
Group Leader: Dave Byng
Training Nights: Tuesday (7pm), Thursday (7pm) and Saturday (9am)
Where: Mountbatten Centre
Distances: These vary as the group do many sessions
Description:
Aims to provide an introduction into the club and to the art of running through a series of exercises, games and competitive targets.
The group has a lighthearted approach but as with all exercise there are risks. Therefore it is important to prepare for running by stretching exercises, buying a decent pair of running shoes and by letting your group leader be aware of any health problems.
The entry level group does include experienced runners and it is important that you follow instructions and do not over compete until you know the other members of the group.
Patience is the key to progress and a slow build up to racing will enable you to meet the objectives of fitness, health, weight loss and enjoyment. The latter is the main objective of the group. When you are ready to move up to the next group seek advice from one of the group leaders and they will advise you.

Bryan
Training Nights: Tuesday (7pm), Thursday (7pm) and Sunday (7.30am with
Dave, 9am with Ray)
Where: Weekdays - Mountbatten Centre, Weekends - see weekend runs page
Distances: 6-8 miles
Description:
Weekday Runs:
A very varied capabilities group with pace variations from around 7+
thru’ 8.5 / 8.75 minute milers. Distance covered is also varied and
caters for both this wide variation & the general improvement of the
bulk of the group at around 8+ mile pace.
It’s good for those both in the ‘comfort zone’ or genuinely looking for improvement. Any one session will incorporate 3 or 4 loops & gives every runner the opportunity to lift the mileage (which varies between 6 to 8) and/or pace as he or she so wishes.
The group also allows for the ‘stresses of the day’ by you choosing to forego the loops or to go for them & up the sweat levels if you are really feeling good. Recovery then coming from within the bulk of the group at a steady 8.25 pace.
Sunday runs:
Ray takes an off road group on a Sunday which starts from various
locations.
Dave takes an early morning road which meets in the public car park behind the Woodman pub in Purbrook.

4b Level
Group Leader: Russ BestleyGroup Pace Leaders: Tony Conway, Howard Clark, Derek Powles, Iaan Davies, Sandra Hopkins
Training Times: Tuesday 7pm, Thursday 7pm, Saturday 9am
Where: Mountbatten Centre
This training group work with a published schedule towards Spring and Autumn marathon targets (based around Lochaber/Stratford/Brighton/London in the Spring and Abingdon/New Forest/Beachy Head in the Autumn). The group training is suitable for marathon runners targeting around 3:30 or under, and we also welcome those team runners aiming to improve their times over shorter distances from 10km to half marathon.
Tuesday sessions are based around Threshold Running and Speedwork, with regular monthly 10km timed sessions to measure improvement. Intervals and reps tend to be longer in the Spring during marathon training, with some shorter and more intense sessions in the Summer.
Thursday sessions are based around Steady Running, with Tempo Pace sections or Progressive Runs at certain times in the schedules. Many regular runners in the group cross over to Martin Bacon’s off road runs during the Summer months – this is recommended as an alternative option.
