Club Sessions (weekdays)

All groups do include experienced runners and it is important that you follow instructions and do not over compete until you know the other members of the group.

Patience is the key to progress and a slow build up  will enable you to meet your objectives whether they be fitness, health, weight loss, enjoyment, racing or a bit of each.

Enjoyment, whilst meeting your priorities, is the main objective of all groups. When you feel you are ready to move to another group seek advice from one of the group leaders and they will advise you.

PJC Running Guide

Tuesday and Thursday

The majority of these start and end at the Mountbatten Centre but members should check the calendar where variations will be recorded.

Entry Level

Aims to provide an introduction into the club and to the art of running through a series of exercises, games and competitive targets.

The group has a lighthearted approach but as with all exercise there are risks. Therefore it is important to prepare for running by stretching exercises, buying a decent pair of running shoes and by letting your group leader be aware of any health problems.

 Level 2

Level 2 builds on the success of the entry level group and welcomes people who join the club ready to run at this level.

In the summer months groups within this level run at locations away from the Mountbatten Centre.

 Level 3

A very varied capability level with those both wanting to run in their 'comfort zone' and those genuinely looking for improvement.

A basic route is followed with loops, which enables runners to lift both the pace and distance.

Average pace for this level is around 8:30 but with variations between 7 and 9 minute mile. Distances covered will generally be between 6 to 8.

In the summer months groups within this level, on occasions, run at locations away from the Mountbatten Centre.

 Level 4

This level work with a published schedule towards Spring and Autumn marathon targets (based around Lochaber/Stratford/Brighton/London in the Spring and Abingdon/New Forest/Beachy Head in the Autumn). The group training is suitable for marathon runners targeting around 3:30 or under, and we also welcome those team runners aiming to improve their times over shorter distances from 10km to half marathon.

Tuesday sessions are based around Threshold Running and Speedwork, with regular monthly 10km timed sessions to measure improvement. Intervals and reps tend to be longer in the Spring during marathon training, with some shorter and more intense sessions in the Summer.

Thursday sessions are based around Steady Running, with Tempo Pace sections or Progressive Runs at certain times in the schedules. Many regular runners in the group cross over to Martin Bacon's off road runs during the Summer months - this is recommended as an alternative option.

Off Road (Thursday)

 Level 2

In 2011 a dedicated off road level 2 group has commenced and runs from the top of Portsdown Hill by Farlington Avenue on a Thursday, at 6.30pm during the summer months.

They undertake a wide range of runs from short distance reps, to hills and steady paced distance runs.

This level is targeted at runners in the 9 -12 minute mile pace.
